Bhairav Kunda Trek in 2022

Introduction

The Bhairavkunda area, northeast of Kathmandu offers the proximity to the Himalayan Mountains than any other area in Nepal, yet this is a remote and unfrequented region. The abrupt variation in altitude found here is astonishing from the narrow trails. From Bhairavkunda, there are no intervening ranges to spoil the views of Jugal Himal in which peaks include Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Madiya (6,257m) and Phurbi Ghhyachu (6,637m). The mixes of mountain culture along the views on the route of the trek are superb. The highlight of the trek is the Bhairavkund, a holy lake situated at 4200m, the dominating skyline and the lifestyle of nomadic people unchanged by time. The trekking group has to be self Descent contained, as there are no lodges/tea houses. Due to this incredible latitudinal range and an unusual geographical and climatic mix, walking this area is a naturalists dream.

Trek to Chakkar Makkar. This place stands on a very flat and beautiful piece of land with magnificent and wonderful panoramic views all over. The walk is about 4 hours. Overnight at camp.

Start trek early morning to reach the highest point or our main destination that is the Bhairavkunda, which is at 4,200 m above sea level. While trekking through this area, we come across various rhododendron forests, Manistone walls etc… If the weather permits, we get fantastic mountain views. One advantage of trekking up above Bhairavkunda is that one can choose how high they go. The high point is normally snow descent covered, but the terrain is not difficult and no ice or snow equipment is necessary. Stay here for 1 descent 2 hours and then retrace back to our last camp i.e. Chakkar Makkar. Overnight at camp.

Our trek to Bhairavkund is almost over by now and we now retrace back to Bagam Gompa, where we will be camping for the night. The trek back is about 3Descent4 hours with great views and sceneries. Overnight at camp at Bagam Gompa.

This is our last day on the trek. Today’s trek is only for about 2 or 2 and half hours. Overnight at Listi Gompa.

Trek down to the Last Resort, which is indeed a great place in itself for the people to relax and enjoy their time after six hard and continuous days of trekking. Facilities available here are White water rafting, bungy jumping, kayaking, canoeing, or relaxing in the cool bar and restaurant or taking bath in the sauna parlor. OR simply retrace back to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
